That NASA helmet: a macabre P.R. touch?

I WAS very interested to read in your diary that you are sceptical about the NASA helmet photos from the Columbia crash. I reached the same conclusion independently, and was telling everyone I knew that I thought the photo fake.

It brought to mind a famous (infamous?) story, perhaps not apocryphal, about a Pulitzer prize winning photographer, who always carried a child's doll with him, as he said it added a human touch to any disaster or crash photos.
