Agency Treasurer Shai Hermesh said Saturday
that he was interrogated and humiliated for three
hours at the airport in Auckland, New Zealand last
Monday.
Hermesh, who carries a diplomatic passport,
landed in New Zealand last Monday during a tour of
the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. According to Hermesh, his personal items,
including his personal organizer were thoroughly
examined. His cellular phone was confiscated, and
he was asked humiliating questionings, including
whether he was a drug dealer, and whether he was
carrying kosher food. Hermesh said that one
of the officials at the airport told him that,
"Israelis are spies and smuggle drugs." The entirety of the interrogation was
videotaped, and investigators told Hermesh that the
harsh rules of inspection apply for all Israelis
who wish to visit New Zealand. Hermesh submitted a complaint to Foreign
Minister Silvan Shalom. Last month two Israelis carrying forged New
Zealand passports were arrested in New Zealand.
Their trial is expected to begin at the end of
May.
