Video of Osama bin Laden, the full text.

Praise be to God. Praise be to God who created creation for His worship and commanded them to do justice and permitted those who are wronged to exact retribution in like measure as they have been treated.

TO continue,

Peace be upon those who follow guidance.

OH American people, my talk to you is about the best way to avoid another Manhattan, about the war, its causes, and results.

I preface my remarks by saying that security is an important pillar of human life. Free people do not relinquish their security. This is contrary to Bush's claim that we hate freedom. Let him tell us why we did not strike Sweden, for example. It is known that those who hate freedom do not have proud souls, like the souls of the 19 people [killed while carrying out the September 11, 2001 attacks], may God have mercy on them. We fought you precisely because we are free and cannot tolerate injustice. We want to restore freedom to our nation. So just as you waste our security, we will waste your security.

Eric Mueller comments:

A COUPLE weeks back al-Jazeera broadcast excerpts of a video tape by Osama bin Laden. Apparently the US didn't want any of that tape broadcast at the time (particularly before the US elections), but in the end Washington allowed al-Jazeera to show parts of it.
The BBC then did a decent translation of those excerpts as broadcast. But today some Islamicist site (that I have not seen) has apparently got hold of the full tape and broadcast it, and another Islamic news site posted a full Arabic transcript of Osama bin Laden's complete message.
Since I doubt that the BBC will go back and do a full version of that translation, I've gone ahead and done it in the interest of a free flow of information.
The Arabic website where I obtained this wondered whether its full publication before the US election would have made any difference. Personally I doubt it, since the American electorate knows nothing about the outside world and cares even less.
But the US is a country that thinks nothing of imposing leaders and constitutions on other peoples at gunpoint.
It's therefore amazing that Washington would invoke "non-interference" on al-Jazeera to prevent Americans from hearing opinions from abroad, lest they disturb cherished delusions, or horror of horrors, prod some citizen into thinking before he or she votes.

Arabist Eric Mueller of Plano, Texas, is this website's expert on Middle Eastern affairs.

Only a stupid thief can imagine that he can infringe upon the security of others and then remain secure himself. When misfortunes befall intelligent people, one of their most important responses will be to seek out the causes so that they might avoid such things.

But I am amazed at you. For although almost four years have passed since the September 11 events, Bush is still practicing distortion and confusion upon you, concealing from you the real reason [for the September 11 attacks]. Thus, the motives still exist for a repeat of what happened.

I will speak to you about the reasons behind these incidents. I will honestly tell you about the minutes in which the decision was made so that you may consider. I say to you that God knows that the idea of striking the towers never occurred to us. But, after things had gone too far and we saw the injustice and tyranny of the US-"Israeli" alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, I started thinking of that.

The events that influenced me directly trace back to 1982 and subsequent events when the United States gave permission to the "Israelis" to invade Lebanon, with the aid of the US Sixth Fleet.

There was bombardment, and the killing and wounding of many. Numerous others were terrified and displaced. I continued to think about those moving scenes of blood, mangled corpses, children, and women strewn about everywhere, of homes destroyed along with all those inside, of towers crashing down upon their residents, of shells raining down without mercy upon our homes.

It was as if a crocodile were eating a helpless child who could do nothing but cry out. Does a crocodile comprehend a dialogue without weapons? The whole world heard and watched but made no response.

At those difficult moments, many ideas that are hard to describe occurred to my mind. However, these ideas produced an overwhelming feeling to reject injustice. They generated a strong determination to punish the unjust ones.

While I was looking at those destroyed towers in Lebanon, the idea arose of punishing the unjust one in a similar manner by destroying towers in the United States so that it would feel some of what we felt and be deterred from killing our children and women.

At one point I became convinced that injustice and the intentional killing of innocent women and children is an established American law, while resistance to that is "terrorism" or "reactionary." Here I am referring to the sanctions that brought death to millions of people [in Iraq], which is what Bush the father did in Iraq in the biggest genocidal massacre of children known to humanity. And I am also referring to the dropping of bombs and millions of pounds of explosives upon millions of children in Iraq, as was done by Bush the son, as well as other such scandalous actions.

It was against the backdrop of these images and many others that the events of September 11 took place, as a response to those great afflictions. Is one to be condemned for protecting his sanctuary? Is defending oneself reprehensible terrorism? If so, then we have no alternative.

This is a message we wanted to convey to you by word and action many times before the events of September 11. You may access it if you wish in my interview with Time Magazine in 1996, and with Peter Arnett of CNN in 1997, and then my interview with George Wener[?] in 1998.

You may access that message in terms of actions, if you will, in [the attacks in] Nairobi, Tanzania, and Aden. And you may access it in my interviews with Abdel Bari Atwan and Robert Fisk, the latter being one of your own people who adheres to your faith, and I believe him to be a neutral person. Can those who proclaim freedom in the White House and the channels subservient to them interview him so that he can convey to the American people what he gathered from us about the things that have caused us to fight you? For if you can avoid those things that have caused the conflict, you would be proceeding along the correct path that will lead America to the security it had before September 11.

This is as regards the war and its causes. As regards its results, by the grace of God they have been positive and very great. They have exceeded all expectations by all criteria for many reasons.

One of the most important reasons is that we did not find it difficult to deal with Bush and his administration, because it is similar to regimes in our countries, half of which are governed by the military and the other half of which are governed by the sons of kings and presidents; and we have a long experience with them. In both categories, you find many who are characterized by hubris, arrogance, greed, and unlawful acquisition of money.

This similarity transpired since Bush the father's visit to the region. While some of our people were dazzled by the United States and hoped that these visits would affect our countries, he, instead, was affected by these royal and military regimes, envying them for remaining in their posts for scores of years, embezzling public money without being held accountable or monitored.

Accordingly, he transferred dictatorship and the repression of freedoms to his son by introducing the Patriot Act under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Bush Senior deemed it appropriate to assign his sons to govern states. He also did not forget to convey the [election] rigging experience from the leaders of the [Arab] region to Florida to benefit from it at critical times.

All these things we mentioned above made it easy for us to inflame and embroil this administration. All we need to do is send a couple of mujahid fighters to the Far East with a piece of paper with the word "al-Qa'idah" written on it, for us to get generals rushing off there in all haste, costing America dearly in financial, human, military, and political terms, yielding it nothing other than some profits for some of its private companies. At the same time, we have learned guerrilla warfare, and the techniques of a war of attrition with a great power. Our mujahideen wore out Russia for 10 years, driving it to bankruptcy and forcing it to withdraw defeated, for which boon may God be praised.

We are now carrying on this policy in order to drain down America to the point of bankruptcy, by the grace of God, and this is not a big thing for God to bring about. There are those who say that al-Qa'idah has triumphed over the White House or that the White House administration has lost in this war, but that is not precisely true. For a close look at the results does not justify the statement that al-Qa'idah is the only cause bringing about these amazing results. The policy of the White House and its insistence upon opening numerous battlefronts to promote its various companies -- whether armament firms, or oil, or construction companies -- all these have helped to bring about these amazing results for al-Qa'idah.

Thus some analysts and diplomats have said that it looks as though we and the White House are working together as one team to target the economy of the United States, although we have different intentions.

For example we can say that al-Qa'idah spent $500,000 on the incident, while America lost at a minimum over $500 billion as a result of the same incident and its reverberations. In other words, every dollar spent by al-Qa'idah defeated a million dollars spent by America, by the grace of God the Exalted.

And in addition to its loss of vast numbers of jobs, America's financial deficits have reached record and astronomical levels, estimated at over a trillion dollars.

More importantly and critically for America, the mujahideen forced Bush onto an emergency budget to continue the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, proving that we are succeeding in our plan to drain the US to the point of bankruptcy, by the grace of God.

It is a fact that this situation makes it clear that al-Qa'idah has gained, but on the other hand it shows that the Bush administration has also gained. That fact becomes clear when one looks at the massive size of the contracts won by big and suspicious companies -- such as Halliburton and similar firms with ties to Bush and his administration. Thus, the loser in fact, is you, the American people and the American economy.

AttaWe had agreed with the chief commander [of the September 11 hijackers] Muhammad Atta -- may God bless him -- that he should accomplish all the operations within 20 minutes before Bush and his administration could take notice. It never occurred to us that the commander-in-chief of the US armed forces would leave 50,000 of his citizens in the two towers to face those great horrors alone, at a time when they needed him badly, because it seemed to him that being preoccupied with the little child's talk about her goat and its butting was more important than being preoccupied with the planes and their ramming into the skyscrapers. This gave us three times the period required for carrying out the operations, praise be to God.

You are also aware that high-placed American strategists and thinkers warned Bush before the war that if he wanted to protect America from weapons of mass destruction, on the supposition that they exist, this would be accomplished by the inspection activity and that all the countries of the world were together with him on that. They said that the interests of America demanded that Bush not push the country into an unjustifiable war, the outcome of which was unknown.

But the blackness of black gold [oil] clouded Bush's view and foresight. He put private interests before general American interests and the result was war, the many deaths, the draining of the American economy, and the entanglement of Bush in the marshes of Iraq to the point that his own future is threatened.

I tell you that more than 15,000 of our people have been killed and tens of thousands have been wounded. More than a thousand of you have been killed and more than 10,000 wounded. And the blood of all of those deaths on both sides stains the hands of Bush, whose aim is oil and business for his private companies. Remember that every action has a reaction.

Finally it is a good idea to contemplate the behests of those who left you on September 11 crying out in despair. Those behests are important and should be brought out in studies and researches. One of the most significant of those last minute cries was the cry, "how wrong we were to leave the White House unsupervised to carry out a foreign policy of aggression against the exploited peoples." It is as if they are telling you, American people, to bring those who caused those deaths to account.

Know that returning to right is better than persisting in doing wrong, and that a rational person does not squander his security, his wealth, and his children for the lies of the White House.

In closing, I tell you that I am speaking truthfully when I say that your security does not lie in the hands of Kerry, Bush, or al-Qa'idah. Your security is in your own hands. Each and every state that does not impinge upon our security will have automatically assured its own security.

God is our Patron, and you have no patron.

Peace be upon those who follow guidance.
