TRANSLATION

A 1201: GERSTENBERG has already tried it on once, by means of the SS. One day an Oberst of the SS, from HIMMLER'S staff, arrived in ROUMANIA on an unknown mission; he was intriguing right and left, and when it gradually came to light that his activities were purely mischievous, KILLINGER sent him home without more ado. At home this Oberst sent in a fat report by way of the SS about political conditions in ROUMANIA, and in it he criticised the whole German legation, the pro-German party, in fact everything about ROUMANIA; and he wrote that the only way out of the extremely difficult situation in ROUMANIA was to appoint General GERSTENBERG immediately as minister at BUCHAREST. Well, GERSTENBERG intrigues with all sorts of shady characters, and it was common knowledge, it was known at the legation too, that GERSTENBERG invited this particular Oberst to his house remarkably often. The Oberst was in and out of his house a lot, particularly at the end of his stay, which, I believe, lasted only three or four weeks; and it was probably then that this memorandum was discussed.

?: Why did KILLINGER tolerate it?

A 1201: KILLINGER chucked him out - but all the same, KILLINGER is a bit weak, because he -

?: Lets himself be choked off too easily?

A 1201: Because he's not sure of himself.

?: Who is it that's backing GERSTENBERG in the G. A. F.?

A 1201: The Reichsmarschall himself.

?: I don' t think GÖRING can live that down. He's put his foot in it too often already. What a mess he's made of the G.A.F.! The Air Staff was good, but what rotten treatment the people got! The very choice of UDET was a catastrophe, and that of KASTNER was another.

A 1201: I believe the removal of KASTNER was the FÜHRER' s own doing.

?: Why?

A 1201: He must have had some inkling that things weren' t quite in order, for I know that GÖRING always wanted to have what's-his-name in command of a Flotte.

?: LANZER(?)? [Website note: sic. Bruno Loerzer]

A 1201: Yes, LANZER(?); but the FÜHRER wouldn't have it. The result was that LANZER(?) lost the command of the Korps and they gave him the personnel Branch.

A .1201: Der Reichsmarschall persönlich.

Was sind da Leute schlecht behandelt worden!
